Why use a VHF radio for the forecast?
|
|
A VHF radio can have more advantages than a CB radio or a cell
phone. The price has dropped and they aren't difficult to use.
Hand held VHF radios are under $100 now and a quality boat mounted
VHF radio can be under $200. Here are some more reasons why
you should have a VHF radio while on the water:
1.
You don't need a license
2.
Their more reliable than cell phones. VHF radios are usually
weather resistant and have better battery life. A cell phone
may not receive service in all areas.
3.
If you're in trouble you can make a may-day call on the VHF
channel 16. This will be heard by the Coast Guard and other
VHF users.

How to fight the weather. |
|
Be weather-wise
Increasing wind, lightning flashes, dark clouds, cooler air,
and choppy water all can mean a storm is forming. Bring
extra gear you may need
A flashlight, extra batteries, matches, a map of where you are,
flares, sun tan lotion, first aid kit, extra sunglasses. Put
all that need to be protected in a waterproof pouch or a container
that floats. Inform friends
and family
Create a Float plan or tell someone where you're going, who
is with you, and how long you'll be away.
Double check equipment
Then check your boat, equipment, boat balance, engine and fuel
supply before leaving. |
